ST. SAVA CELEBRATION IN PORTLAND, MAINE

Biddeford, MA – The Portland parish joyously and festively celebrated the feast of St. Sava on Saturday, January 28, 2006.

The celebration began with the Divine Liturgy celebrated by host priest Fr. Ivan Marjanovic and concelebrants: V. Rev. Aleksandar Vlajkovic from the Boston parish, Fr. Basil Arabatzis from Saco, MA Greek parish and Fr. John Teage of the Antiochian parish. V. Rev. Aleksandar preached at the Divine Liturgy on the greatest and significance of St. Sava with the Serbian people in which he pointed out that St. Sava, by his example, teaches us how we should be and what should be striving for in our lives. The St. Sava Program followed the cutting of the Slava Kolach in which twelve children took part. The audience paid close attention as the children recited their poems in Serbian taking particular notice of Jovana Kakuca and Anastasija Filipovic who played the violin. After the program the children were given small gifts and everyone proceeded to the church hall for a luncheon. Dusko Bakarac together with his family were honored kumovi of the day’s celebration and they gave a portion of the Slava Kolach to Sinisa Fillipovic who accepted to be the kum for next year’s celebration.

This was another January feast celebrated prayerfully at the mission parish in Portland, Maine.
