ST. SAVA PARISH OF MCKEESPORT HOSTS NATIVE ‘DAUGHTER’ BOOK CELEBRATION

Local International Author Champions the Women of Serbia

On Wednesday, May 28, 2025, the eve of the Holy and Great Feast of Ascension -Spasovdan, the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of McKeesport-Duquesne, PA, welcomed home their native daughter, Mila Evanovich, for an evening of conversation and fellowship, focusing on her internationally-acclaimed book, “No Bread Tomorrow: A sweeping drama of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia", a work of historical fiction that champions the lives of several Serbian women who took active roles in the Second World War in Serbia.

Those in attendance, over 125, had been asked to donate an entrance fee, with all proceeds going to our beloved St. Sava Shadeland Summer Camp. Our Holy Trinity Circle of Serbian Sisters, led by our tireless President, Danica (Dee-Dee) Baskot, provided an array of Serbian delicacies and light refreshments for the crowd. Our beloved Fr. Stevo Rocknage, Protopresbyter-Stavrophor,welcomed Mila “home” and shared reflections of her parents when he first came to McKeesport in 1988.

In her presentation, Mila wove a tapestry-narrative that helped paint the picture of both the perseverance and the deep faith that her women demonstrated as they experienced the horrors of the time: at times, the people were moved to tears; at other times, awe and respect. In the end, Mila received a well-deserved standing ovation from the people and promised to continue her writing in the next volume.
