The event, held at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York City, was attended by many friends and colleagues who took the opportunity to remember the service and legacy of Archbishop Demetrios. In attendance were His Eminence Metropolitan Savas of Pittsburgh, His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey, National Chancellor His Grace Bishop Nektarios of Diokleia, His Grace Bishop Athenagoras of Nazianzos, His Grace Bishop Anthony of Synada, Bishop Irinej of Washington-New York and Eastern America (Serbian Orthodox Church), Permanent Representative at Permanent Delegation of Greece to UN in New York Evangelos Sekeris, Dean of the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity V. Rev. Archimandrite Chrysostomos Gilbert, Archdiocesan District Chancellor Fr. Elias Villis, Archbishop Demetrios’ brother Dr. Anthony Trakatellis and his wife Tanya, clergy from the area, and friends. Present also was the book’s sponsor Archon Christos Spyropoulos.
Many guest speakers offered heartfelt words of sincere gratitude and praise for the erudite and dignified person, yet humble and gentle soul, Archbishop Demetrios. Now in the 97th year of his life, his service given wholly to God and His people, evoked resounding words of love and admiration from each of the many presenters. Perhaps the most touching words offered came from his former Archdeacon, now Protopresbyter Panteleimon Papadopoulos, who spoke in tender terms of a true son toward his spiritual elder, noting that his perspective was offered - unlike that of the book, which is seen through the lens of a camera - through the lens of his heart from the many years of faithfully being at the side of this most remarkable hierarch.
In his remarks Archbishop Elpidophoros honored the legacy of his predecessor and thanked Dimitris and Revekka saying,
“The occasion of the publication, and now presentation, of Archbishop Demetrios: The Second Decade 2009 – 2019, is certainly a cause of joy and reflection. This record of the final decade of Archbishop Demetrios’ archiepiscopal ministry in America, compiled by Dimitris and Rebecca, is a worthy companion to the first volume, which spanned the very significant first decade, hallmarked by the terrorist attacks of September Eleventh. This second tome, which is as weighty as one might imagine from its size and page count, represents the concluding years of His Eminence’s Archpastoral mission in the United States. With this visual record, the nearly twenty years of His Eminence’s tenure is chronicled in colorful and artful detail.
"Therefore, I will not prolong an introduction that is as unnecessary as it is unrequired. Archbishop Demetrios is well-known and well-loved from coast to coast. He is an essential part of the history of this First Eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne in the Western Hemisphere. Dimitris and Rebecca have given us his images and they shall remain indelible. But why stress the replica when the original is right before us?”
