CHRIST IS RISEN!
With the blessing of His Grace Irinej, Bishop of Washington-New York and Eastern America, the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Elijah in Aliquippa hosted a beautiful and inspiring Fresco Seminar on Saturday, April 26th, bringing together artists, faithful parishioners, and visitors for a day filled with learning, creativity, and spiritual fellowship.
The day began with an educational lecture on the preparation and technique of fresco painting, offering participants a deep understanding of this ancient sacred art (al fresco - painting with pigment on wet plaster). The lecture emphasized not only the technical aspects but also the theological and liturgical importance of frescoes in the Orthodox tradition.
Following the lecture, a hands-on workshop allowed each participant to create their own fresco under guided instruction. The quality of work produced was truly outstanding, reflecting the dedication, enthusiasm, and prayerful spirit of all involved. Many participants expressed a deepened appreciation for the spiritual dimension of sacred art, seeing their creative work as both an offering to God and a means of spiritual growth.
We were especially honored to welcome Fr. Zoran Petrel, an expert in fresco technique from Paris, France. Together with our host, Fr. George, he demonstrated the ancient method of fresco painting. Both priests completed beautiful frescoes during the workshop and generously donated their works to the Church of St. Elijah, offering a lasting gift to our parish community.
The seminar concluded with a heartfelt presentation of the participants’ finished works, followed by the celebration of Vespers. This prayerful ending sealed the day’s blessings in gratitude and joy. Visitors had the rare opportunity to witness the live creation of frescoes and to learn more about the rich beauty of the Orthodox artistic tradition.
We are deeply grateful for everyone’s participation, energy, and faith, all of which made this seminar a true success. We especially thank His Grace Bishop Irinej for his blessing and paternal support for this event.
Until next time — let us continue to paint in the name of the Lord!
In Christ,
Fr. George Popovich
