MATERICE - SERBIAN MOTHERS’ DAY CELEBRATED IN ST. NICHOLAS PARISH IN JOHNSTOWN
On Sunday, December 29, 2024, Materice - Serbian Mothers' Day was joyfully celebrated at the St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. This is a day, which invites us to remember and honor the invaluable role of mothers in our lives. Mothers are the pillars of the family and society, whose love, sacrifice, and patience shape us and guide us on the right path with kindness and care.

This special day also deepens our understanding of the boundless love a mother has for her children and the sacrifices she makes for them. Just as Christ gives Himself for humanity, so too does a mother give all of herself for her family, often putting her own needs aside.

As St. John Chrysostom beautifully stated, “The love of a mother is the nearest thing to God’s love on earth,” reminding us of the sacredness and depth of maternal love. In keeping with tradition, our Popadija was ceremonially tied with a ribbon as a sign of respect, love, and gratitude. With warmth and generosity, she “redeemed” herself with lovely gifts, bringing joy to everyone present.

We were also deeply touched by the kindness of Veselinka and her Đorđević family, which donated a beautiful and delicious cake that added to the festive spirit of our celebration. Additionally, we extend heartfelt thanks to Rose Marinković and her family, who prepared thoughtful gifts that further enriched this joyful occasion. Their contributions exemplify the love and unity that Materice inspires in our community.

The act of binding the Popadija symbolizes the obedience and love children owe their mothers and the unbreakable spiritual bond between them. It is a powerful reminder of the connection between family and faith, just as our relationship with God is a source of strength and blessing.

May this day continue to inspire us to show gratitude, love, and devotion to the mothers who bring light, warmth, and guidance into our lives. Thank you to all who participated in this beautiful celebration.
