St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary Launches Online Catechist Certification Program
Online Catechist Certification Program - Apply Today
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are excited to announce that St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary (SVOTS) is now accepting applications for its new online certification program for catechists, "Laying Foundations for Teaching the Faith." This program is set to launch for the 2024–2025 academic year, and we invite all interested parties to apply.
Program Overview:
Orthodox parishes across North America are experiencing a surge of interest in the Holy Orthodox Christian faith, leading to more opportunities for teaching and learning within parish life. While the parish priest remains the central figure in the teaching ministry, having trained, certified, and knowledgeable lay catechists is crucial to enhance the welcome, education, and integration of newcomers into our communities.
The "Laying Foundations for Teaching the Faith" program adopts a “teach the teacher” approach, covering a range of essential topics, including:
- Management of group dynamics
- Key biblical, church history, theological, and liturgical subjects, with a focus on effective teaching methods
- Awareness of various resources for catechetical training
- Guidance on approaching contemporary and contentious questions
- Encouragement of stewardship and devotion to the local parish
- Matters of worldview and self-knowledge in our complex time
The program consists of twenty-six (26) synchronous and asynchronous sessions, spread over one academic year (September 2024–May 2025). Candidates will work closely with their parish priest, who will join the program at certain appropriate moments to ensure the learning remains rooted in parish life.
Program Cost and Enrollment:
SVOTS is offering the space-limited first cohort of this certification program at a discounted rate of $900. Future cohorts will be priced at $2,400. We encourage parishes to invest in their growth by supporting the training of a catechist within their community.
Priests and interested lay catechist candidates are invited to contact the facilitating instructor, Archpriest Kirill Sokolov, Ed.D., at online@svots.edu for more information or to express interest.
Let us work together to build a stronger foundation for teaching the faith and welcoming all who seek the truth in our Holy Orthodox Church.
In Christ,
Srdjan Maksimovic
