On the eve of Lazarus Saturday, over 100 community members and friends of St Vladimir’s Seminary attended an in-person rendition of Patriarch Abraham, a theatrical performance staged by seminarians and faculty in the seminary’s Metropolitan Philip Auditorium.
The text of the play was originally written in Serbian by Dr Nenad Božović, professor of Old Testament and the director of the Biblical Institute at the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade. The original version of this “biblio-drama” has been performed several times in Serbia, not only by students of the Orthodox Theological Faculty but also across the country. In elementary and high schools, the performance has served as an interactive teaching method within Religious Education curricula. The English translation of the play was done by seminarian Mihail Golić (M.A. ‘24); Mihailo Vlajković (M.A. ‘24), a former student under Prof. Božović, directed the play. Associate Professor of Old Testament at St Vladimir’s Seminary, Dr Michael Legaspi, served as faculty advisor and narrator for the production. The amateur acting ensemble was composed of 19 students and faculty of St Vladimir’s Seminary.
In Patriarch Abraham, the major events of the life of Abraham are faithfully and vividly retold. The story opens up with the account of Abraham's father, Terah, and the migration of his family to Haran. After several scenes highlighting how Abraham established his home with Sarah following the return from Egypt, a special emphasis is placed on Abraham's encounter with the Lord at the Oak of Mamre. This scene provides an introduction to two significant events in Abraham's life: the birth of Isaac and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. The play's underlying message is the importance of trust in God's providence, which Abraham famously exhibited at pivotal points in his life, such as the establishment of the Covenant with God and the Aqedah or the binding of Isaac for sacrifice.
Audience members were greatly moved by the heartfelt portrayals of the characters by the seminarians. “The famous stories from the life of Abraham really came alive with theatrical reenactment,” said one attendee. “It’s really clear to see how writing and performing ‘biblio-dramas’ can be a great tool in the religious educator’s arsenal.”
The student actors in this premiere performance of Patriarch Abraham in English were especially motivated to put on the play as a way to take part in Lenten almsgiving. After considering several possible options, the students decided to donate all contributions and ticket purchase proceeds toward the construction of a new well in Gulu, Uganda, the hometown of seminarian Dn Richard Okello (M.Div. ‘24). Dn Richard’s wife, young children, and his entire community had been suffering from severe water shortages and accompanying health hazards due to recent regional droughts. Mihail Golić explained that by undertaking the play as a way to give alms, “this event reminds us that the time of Great and Holy Lent should not only be marked by abstaining from food and a more active prayer life but also by constant care for others, remembering the Lord’s commandments regarding charity” (Matthew 6.1–6).
Students undertook the fundraising in earnest, sharing a GoFundMe link with friends, parishioners, and community members and collecting optional, cash-only donations at the door on the night of the play. Thanks to their efforts, the donations of many who attended or gave in absentia, and the large contributions of a few generous donors, the total amount raised was over $6,000.
On this occasion, we extend our gratitude to Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Father Djokan Majstorović, the parish priest at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Paterson, NJ. Thanks to his efforts, a large number of believers from the Serbian Orthodox Church in Paterson, New York, and the surrounding area were present among the audience and as benefactors.
The hard work and dedication of everyone involved in this charitable initiative yielded positive results in a very short period of time. After the Spring semester of 2024, Deacon Richard returned to his hometown and shared the wonderful news with the St. Vladimir community about the commencement of the construction of a much-needed new well in Gulu.

Уочи Лазареве суботе, преко 100 чланова заједнице и пријатеља Академије Светог Владимира присуствовало је извођењу „Патријарха Аврама“, позоришне представе коју су извели студенти и професори у аудиторијуму Митрополита Филипа на Академији.
Текст представе је оригинално написао на српском језику др Ненад Божовић, професор Старог завета и директор Библијског института на Православном богословском факултету Универзитета у Београду. Ова верзија „библио-драме“ је више пута извођена у Србији, не само од стране студената Православног богословског факултета, већ и широм земље. У основним и средњим школама, представа је служила као интерактивни метод учења у оквиру верске наставе. Превод на енглески језик извршио је Михаил Голић; Михаило Влајковић, бивши студент проф. Божовића, режирао је представу. Доцент за Стари завет на Академији Светог Владимира, др Мајкл Легаспи, био је саветник и наратор представе. Аматерски глумачки ансамбл чинило је 19 студената и професора Академије.
У представи „Патријарх Авраам“, главни догађаји из живота овог старозаветног патријарха су верно и живописно пренети. Прича почиње причом о Авраамовом оцу, Тари, и миграцији његове породице у Харан. Након неколико сцена које приказују како је Авраам основао свој дом са Саром по повратку из Египта, посебан нагласак је стављен на Авраамов сусрет са Господом код мамврејског дуба. Ова сцена служи као увертира у два значајна догађаја у Авраамовом животу: рођење Исака и уништење Содома и Гоморе. Основна порука представе је значај поверења у Божији промисак, које је Авраам испољио у кључним тренуцима свог живота, као што су успостављање Савеза са Богом и приношење Исака на жртву.
Гледаоци су били дубоко дирнути приказом ликова од стране студената. „Познате приче из Аврамовог живота заиста су оживеле кроз позоришно извођење“, рекао је један од присутних у публици. „Јасно је како писање и извођење ‘библио-драма’ могу бити одлично средство у арсеналу вероучитеља.“
Студенти, у овом премијерном извођењу „Патријарха Аврaама“ на енглеском језику, били су посебно мотивисани да искористе представу као начин учествовања у добротворним делатностиома током Великог Часног Поста. Након разматрања неколико могућих опција, студенти су одлучили да све прилоге и приходе од продаје карата донирају за изградњу новог бунара у Гулу, Уганда, родном месту њиховог колеге, ђакона Ричарда Окела. Супруга ђакона Ричарда, његова деца и читава његова заједница патили су од озбиљних несташица воде и пратећих здравствених проблема због недавних регионалних суша. Михаил Голић је објаснио да нас извођење представе као начин исказивања љубави према ближњем подсећа да време Великог и Светог Поста не треба да буде обележено само уздржавањем од хране и активнијим молитвеним животом, већ и сталном бригом за друге, сећајући се Господњих заповести у вези са доброчинством (Матеј 6:1–6).
Студенти су озбиљно приступили прикупљању средстава, делећи GoFundMe линк са пријатељима, парохијанима и члановима својих заједница и прикупљајући добровољне готовинске донације на улазу на вече извођења представе. Захваљујући њиховим напорима, донацијама многих који су присуствовали, као и великим прилозима неколико великодушних донатора, укупан износ прикупљених средстава износио је преко 6.000 долара.
Овом приликом упућујемо захвалност протојереју-ставрофору оцу Ђокану Мајсторовићу, парохијском свештенику у Цркви Светог Јована Крститеља у Патерсону. Захваљујући његовим напорима, велики број верника Српске Православне Цркве у Патерсону, Ко и Њујорку и околини били су присутни у публици и уврстили се добротворе.
Напоран рад и посвећеност свих укључених у ову добротворну иницијативу донели су плодове у врло кратком периоду. Након пролећног семестра 2024. године, ђакон Ричард, вративши се у своје родно место, поделио је дивне вести са заједницом Академије Светог Владимира о почетку изградње преко потребног новог бунара у Гулу.
