Serbian Children’s Day
Sunday, December 17, 2023
My dear and most beloved Children,
Christmas is coming soon, which means in Serbian, Bozhich – little Christ is coming! What joy for all of us! For the Virgin Mary, gives birth in a cave, on straw, among domestic animals, and lays this Holy Infant in a manger, as Joseph, his foster father, guards both. Together, they offer Him the love and protection of a family.
In our Serbian Tradition, for this reason, we set aside three weeks before Christmas to honor children and parents. First, we celebrate Detinjci – Children’s Day, then, Materice – Mother’s Day, and finally, Oci – Father’s Day. On those days, the honorees are symbolically tied up and must offer some small gift to gain their release! It is our unique Serbian way to how we bind ourselves to the ones we love. Then, they respond in kind by giving gifts on their day instead of receiving gifts! This way, when Christmas comes, all gift giving is complete, and Christ as the only true Gift given to everyone!
May you have a blessed and wonderful celebration of Serbian Children’s Day!
With much Paternal love and blessings,
+IRINEJ
