On Sunday, January 29, 2023, the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church of McKeesport-Duquesne, Pennsylvania was led in celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy by His Grace Bishop Irinej. This was also the Patronal Feast Day - Slava Celebration for their Patron St. Sava the First Archbishop of Serbia and Enlightener of the Serbian People.
Prior to the Divine Liturgy, Nigel Daniel Pacura, a member of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church, was tonsured a Reader in the Church by Bishop Irinej. Concelebrating with His Grace was parish priest, Protopresbyter-Stavrophor Stevan Rocknage, assisted by Deacons Daniel August and Mark Matejevich, together with Reader John Buffalini.
During his homily, His Grace spoke of the profound meaning of Zacchaeus Sunday in announcing the approach of Great and Holy Lent. The two prevalent themes being the desire to see Christ and overcoming one’s shortcomings.
The Bishop compared the desire of Zacchaeus to that of St. Peter, the veneration of whose chains we celebrated on that Sunday, who could walk on the waters as long as he was focused on Christ. Thereafter, St. Sava, our first Teacher and Enlightener, offered us the ability to overcome our shortcomings through enlightenment. For Christ is the Light of the World.
This year’s Honored Hosts - Kumovi were David and Donna Vranesevic with Youth Host Olivia Eremic.
The Church School Children presented a wonderful St. Sava program and hosted a festal banquet for all in attendance in the Church Hall following the Divine Liturgy.
AXIOS! Dear Nigel on your tonsuring and Srećna Slava to the entire St. Sava Parish Family!
