St. Sava Camp Shadeland Helps Those in Need

“For I was hungry and you gave me food,

I was thirsty and you gave me drink,

I was a stranger and you welcomed me”

(Matthew 25:35).

Springboro, Pennsylvania is home to St. Sava Camp Shadeland. A small rural town of only 600 people, Shadeland’s “neighbors” are facing a battle due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the need to cancel the 2020 camp season, the Federation of the Circles of Serbian Sisters, Savez K.S.S, decided to donate all unused food to the neighboring food bank that aids those struggling in Springboro. Since it is such a rural area, the food bank often struggles to provide provisions, making these pressing times an even bigger challenge.

With the blessing of His Grace Bishop Irinej, on April 26-27, 2020, K.S.S President Millie Radovick and Vice President DeeDee Baskot organized the distribution of the food. The food bank, run out of Conneaut Valley Church of the Nazarene, serves around 130 families under the direction of church pastor, Reverend Marshall Lilly. This foodbank feeds about 400 qualifying people of Springboro and Conneautville area monthly, helping them in every way possible through not only food, but clothing and other basic necessities.

Filling 2 vans, St. Sava Camp was able to donate a variety of items ranging from canned goods, pastas, toilet paper, paper towels, and frozen foods. The Savez K.S.S was helped by Natalie Dean and Nina Topich in this endeavor.

Reverend Marshall, on behalf of the entire foodbank, was extremely grateful for the large donation that was made. Additionally, both the Eastern Diocese and Savez K.S.S made monetary donations to the foodbank to aid in assisting these families during such challenging times.

Although our camp season has been cancelled, our presence will still be felt by those less fortunate in the Springboro area.
