When, one day, someone studies the history of the Serbian people and their capital during the twenty-first century, they will notice that the citizens of Belgrade wrote the most beautiful pages of their city’s chronicle precisely on Spasovdan, the feast of the Ascension of the Lord.

They will also notice that, in that priceless book of Belgrade’s history—a history of which few cities can boast—one page stands out in particular with its radiance, inscribed in golden letters on this very day, May 21, 2026. They may even imagine a humble chronicler, bent over a blank sheet of paper, unsuccessfully searching for the right words with which to describe and preserve for future generations the trace of the extraordinary and magnificent blessing granted to today’s generation of Belgrade’s citizens.

And they—thousands upon thousands of them, old and young alike, mothers, fathers, children, students with their teachers and professors, seminarians and university students, folklore ensembles, church choirs, members of the Army and Police, priests and monks—gathered in endless columns before the Ascension Church and the surrounding streets, all united in heart and voice, with the same prayer in their souls: Most Holy Theotokos, save us!

The Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos—one of Christianity’s greatest relics—arrived at Belgrade’s Ascension Church the day before, through the love and generosity of the brotherhood of the Athonite monastery of Vatopedi and its abbot Ephraim, a great friend of the Serbian people, who personally escorted the Holy Belt and handed it from his own hands to His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije.

It was moving to see thousands of people last night in the courtyard of the Ascension Church and the surrounding streets, standing in endless lines until late hours, in spiritual peace and prayerful joy, waiting for hours to bow before and venerate the miraculous Belt of the Virgin Mary. Countless more followed their Patriarch today in the liturgical procession toward the memorial temple of the Serbian people on Vračar.

Through the streets of Knez Miloš and Kralj Milan, then across Liberation Boulevard and Karađorđe Park, stretched an endless column of the faithful, and with them an even longer and wider column of all those remembered in the prayers of those present: departed fathers and mothers; the sick and suffering; prisoners and the poor; refugees, exiles, and the dispersed; our brothers and sisters in Kosovo, Metohija, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Dalmatia, Montenegro, Boka, and all Serbian lands; those far away and traveling; those who heal, defend, and protect us; those who study and those who teach us; and all those who, for whatever reason, could not come to their capital today. Yet the capital—the City of the Mother of God—was with them.

Arriving in impeccable order and spiritual peace at the Saint Sava Plateau, the procession and its holiest part—the Belt of the Most Holy Theotokos—were joyfully welcomed by the bells of the Saint Sava Cathedral. And while prayers to the Lord and the Mother of God were being offered before the holy relic displayed beneath the vaults of the magnificent Cathedral by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, the column of pious people was still passing through Slavija Square.

Alongside the most venerable archimandrites and abbots Ephraim of Vatopedi and Methodius of Hilandar and their monastic brotherhoods, participating in the joyful celebration of the capital’s patron feast were the following metropolitans and bishops: Pahomije of Vranje, Jovan of Šumadija, David of Kruševac, Ilarion of Timok, Arsenije of Niš, Siluan of Australia and New Zealand, Methodius of Budimlje-Nikšić, Irinej of Washington-New York and Eastern America, Kirilo of Buenos Aires and South-Central America, Heruvim of Osijek Polje and Baranja, Isihije of Valjevo, Justin of Paris and Western Europe, Nektarije of London and Britain-Ireland, Ilarion of Novo Brdo, Dositej of Lipljan, Petar of Toplica, Nikon of Jenopolje, Tikhon of Moravica, Serafim of Kostajnica, and retired Bishop Georgije of Canada; Archimandrite Nektarije, chief secretary of the Holy Synod of Bishops; Archimandrite Danilo, director of the Patriarchal Administrative Office; the highest state officials; representatives of the Serbian Army, Police, and national cultural and scientific institutions.

Continuing the tradition that the Holy Cross at the head of the procession be carried by a devout Christian who multiplied his God-given talents for the benefit of the people and the Church, and to the pride of his parents, this year the honor of being cross-bearer was bestowed upon Mr. Andrej Drobnjaković, a student of the Mathematical Gymnasium and multiple award winner at knowledge olympiads around the world.

Participating in the Ascension Day procession were also the ministers: Minister of Defense Bratislav Gašić; Minister for Family Care and Demography Jelena Žarić Kovačević; Minister for Labor, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski; Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Snežana Paunović; and Dr. Nenad Popović, minister without portfolio responsible for international economic cooperation and the social position of the Church in the country and abroad.

The gentle and melodious voices of the members of the Choir of the of Saint Sava Cathedral, under the direction of conductor Dr. Katarina Stanković, and the children’s choir Rastko, under the direction of conductor Milena Antonović, once again confirmed the beauty of Serbian spiritual creativity and choral chanting, this evening especially inspired by the grace of the Holy Belt of the Mother of God.

Када неко некада буде изучавао историју српског народа и његове престонице током двадесет првог века приметиће да су житељи Београда најлепше странице летописа свог града исписивали управо о Спасовдану, празнику Вазнесења Господњег.

Приметиће и да се у тој бесцен књизи београдске повести, у повести којом се мало који град може подичити, својим сјајем издваја страница забележена златним словима баш данас, 21. маја 2026. године. Моћи ће и да замисле како скромни хроничар, погурен над белином папира, безуспешно тражи праве речи којима би описао и за будуће генерације сачувао траг о несвакидашњем и  величанственом благослову који је имала данашња генерација Београђана.

А њих, хиљаде и хиљаде, и старо и младо, мајке, очеви, деца, школарци са вероучитељима и професорима, богослови и студенти, фолклорна друштва, црквени хорови, припадници Војске и Полиције, свештеници и монаси, у непрегледним колонама су се сабирали пред Вазнесењском црквом и оближњим улицама, а сви, једнодушно и једногласно, са истом молитвом у срцу: Пресвета Богородице, спаси нас!

Појас Пресвете Богородице – једна од највећих светиња хришћанства – стигао је у београдски Вазнесењски храм дан раније љубављу и добротом свештеног братства светогорског манастира Ватопеда и његовог игумана Јефрема, великог пријатеља српског народа, који је Часни Појас лично допратио и из своје руке предао Његовој Светости Патријарху г. Порфирију.

Дирљиво је било видети хиљаде Београђана који су синоћ у порти Вазнесењске цркве и околним улицама до касних часова у непрегледном реду, у духовном миру и молитвеној радости, сатима чекали да се поклоне и целивају Чудесни Појас Дјеве Марије. Небројено више њих кренуло је данас за својим Патријархом у литијском ходу ка заветном храму српског народа на Врачару.

Улицама Кнеза Милоша и Краља Милана, па преко Булевара ослобођења и Карађорђевог парка, развукла се непрегледна колона верних, а са њима и још дужа и шира колона оних који су били у молитвама свих присутних: уснули оци и матере; болесни и невољни; заточеници и сиромашни; избегли, прогнани и расејани; наша браћа и сестре на Косову, у Метохији, Босни, Херцеговини, Далмацији, Црној Гори, Боки и свим српским крајевима; они који су далеко и на путу; они који нас лече, бране и чувају; они који уче и који нас уче; и сви они који из било ког разлога не стигоше данас у своју престоницу; али престоница – Град Мајке Божје – би са њима.

Стигавши у беспрекорном поретку и духовном миру на Светосавски плато, литију и њен најсветији део – Појас Пресвете Богородице – радосно су дочекала звона Светосавског храма. И док је молитву Господу и Мајци Божјој, пред светињом изложеном под сводовима величанственог храма, узносио Патријарх српски г. Порфирије, колона благочестивог народа је и даље пролазила преко трга Славија.

Поред високопреподобних архимандрита и игумана ватопедског Јефрема и хиландарског Методија и њихове братије, у радости прославе престоничке крсне славе учествовали су високопреосвећена и преосвећена господа архијереји: врањски Пахомије, шумадијски Јован, крушевачки Давид, тимочки Иларион, нишки Арсеније, аустралијско-новозеландски Силуан, будимљанско-никшићки Методије; вашингтонско-њујоршки и источноамерички Иринеј, буеносајрески и јужно-централноамерички Кирило, осечкопољски и барањски Херувим, ваљевски Исихије, париски и западноевропски Јустин, лондонски и британско-ирски Нектарије, новобрдски Иларион, липљански Доситеј, топлички Петар, јенопољски Никон, моравички Тихон, костајнички Серафим и умировљени канадски Георгије; архимандрит Нектарије, главни секретар Светог Архијерејског Синода; архимандрит Данило, директор Патријаршијске управне канцеларије; највиши државни званичници, представници Војске Србије, Полиције и националних културних и научних установа.

Настављајући традицију да на челу литије Часни Крст носи благоверни хришћанин који је своје дарове од Бога умножио на корист рода и Цркве, а на понос својих родитеља, ове године чашћу да буде крстоносац овенчан је г. Андреј Дробњаковић, ученик Математичке гммназије вишеструко награђиван на олимпијадама знања широм света.

У Спасовданској литији учешће су узели и министри: одбране г. Братислав Гашић, за бригу о породици и демографију гђа Јелена Жарић Ковачевић, за рад, запошљавање, борачка и социјална питања гђа Милица Ђурђевић Стаменковски, државне управе и локалне самоуправе гђа Снежана Пауновић и др Ненад Поповић, министар без портфеља задужен за међународну економску сарадњу и друштвени положај Цркве у земљи и иностранству.

Благи и милозвучни гласови чланова Хора храма Светог Саве, под управом диригента др Катарине Станковић, и Дечјег хора Растко, под управом диригента Милене Антоновић, изнова су потврдили лепоту српског духовног стваралаштва и хорског појања, ове вечери посебно надахнутог благодаћу Часног Појаса Мајке Божје.
