A NIGHT OF RADIANCE: CELEBRATING THE EVE OF THE NATIVITY AT ST. SAVA, MCKEESPORT

On the holy evening of Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the faithful of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in McKeesport-Duquesne, Pennsylvania gathered in joyful anticipation to celebrate Badnje veče, the Eve of the Nativity of our Lord. St. Sava Parish, led by Proto Stevan Rocknage, was deeply honored to welcome His Grace Bishop Irinej, along with visiting Deacons Daniel August and Mark Matejevich. Their presence and His Grace’s fatherly blessings served as a beautiful reminder of the unity of the Church as we prepared our hearts to receive the Christ Child and celebrate the Great Feast of the Incarnation of our Lord God and Savior.

The celebration began with the traditional blessing of the Badnjak, led by His Grace. As the oak branches were blessed and distributed, the ancient customs of our Orthodox faith came to life, bridging the gap between sacred tradition and our modern community. It was a moving sight to see our parishioners joined by many guests and visitors—including those of other faiths—all drawn together by the warmth of the hearth and the universal message of peace and goodwill that defines the Nativity season.

Following the outdoor blessing, the sanctuary was illuminated for what many described as one of the most transcendent Nativity Vigils in our parish’s history. The liturgical beauty was elevated by the St. Sava Choir, whose members poured their hearts into every hymn, creating a tapestry of sound that truly echoed the angelic proclamation of "Glory to God in the highest." The spirit of the Vigil reminded all in attendance that the birth of Christ is not merely a historical event, but a living reality that transforms our lives today.

The evening concluded with a vibrant fellowship hour, where the joy of the service spilled over into heartfelt conversation. His Grace Bishop Irinej took the time to reconnect with longtime friends and warmly welcome new faces, embodying the spirit of Christian hospitality. It was a truly memorable night of unity and prayer, leaving our community strengthened and renewed as we celebrated the coming of the Light of the World together as one family in Christ.
