On Sunday December 21, 2025,  St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church in Elkins Park (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, was blessed to be visited by our Father and Hierarch, His Grace Kyr Irinej. 

His Grace celebrated the Divine Liturgy, concelebrated by Protopresbyter Milorad Orlic, parish priest, and assisted by Deacon Bojan Giligorevic. Chanting the responses were Radovan Micic, Reader Mihail Golic, who accompanied His Grace, and our burgeoning St. Nicholas Youth Choir.  The Epistle was read in Serbian and English by brothers Milutin and Sava Stojmirovich.

In His edifying homily on the Rich Young Man who approached Christ, first inquiring as to what must he do to inherit eternal life. His Grace directed our attention to the fact that the young man approaches Christ as one teacher amongst many, and not as the Incarnate God-man. This is seen in Christ’s admonishment to the young man’s salutation of “Good Teacher” - “…the only Good One is God”. This poses the question for all of us: are we capable of recognizing in the person of Christ, that He is Good precisely because He is, in His Hypostasis, perfect God and perfect man? This is crucial in order that we might realize our own personal salvation. 

The second question is, “what must I do to inherit eternal life”; it is noteworthy that the Lord begins His reply by citing, first, the commandments that are negations, which address our interactions with our neighbors - "do not kill, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not bear false witness". Following this summons to catharsis, Christ then adds, "honor your father and mother”, to which the young man affirmed that all this he had fulfilled from his youth. But when the Lord directed him to go and sell all that he had, to liberate himself from his enslavement to material goods, the young man went away sad - bearing tragic witness to the fact that he was enslaved to his wealth, and that this was more important to him than the freedom needed for him to inherit eternal life.

St. Nicholas, patron saint of the local church, is, in fact, noted the Bishop, a sterling example of one, having been born into a wealthy family, and what it is to have given away everything that he inherited, in order to, as we sing in his troparion, "gain heights by humility and riches by poverty”.

 As the visit of our Father and Hierarch coincided with Serbian Children’s Day  - Detinjci,His Grace enthusiastically participated in the “tying” of the children. The children “earned” their liberation by singing the hymn to St. Nicholas, “O Kto, Kto…”. His Grace edified the children by reciting the English version of the same hymn, composed by Fr. Nikodim (Pribojan) of blessed memory. In thanks for their efforts, the children received candy-canes form His Grace, and were rewarded with gifts from the parish.

A sumptuous luncheon was prepared for all by our diligent Circle of Serbian Sisters. We thank our Father and Hierarch for His continuous paternal concern for our community.

Архипастирска посета Филаделфији на Детињце

У недељу, 21. децембра, Српска православна црква Светог Николе у Елкинс Парку (Филаделфија), у Пенсилванији, била је благословена посетом нашег Оца и Јерарха, Његовог Преосвештенства Кир ИРИНЕЈА.

Његовом Преосвештенству су у служењу Свете Литургије саслуживали протонамесник Милорад Орлић, парох, и ђакон Бојан Гилигоревић. Појање су одговарали Радован Мицић, чтец Михаил Голић (који је пратио Његово Преосвештенство), као и наш млади и све бројнији омладински хор храма Светог Николе. Апостол су на српском и енглеском језику прочитали Милутин и Сава Стојмировић.

У својој поучној беседи о богатом младићу који прилази Христу питајући шта треба да чини како би наследио живот вечни, Његово Преосвештенство је указао на чињеницу да младић приступа Христу као једном учитељу међу многима, а не као оваплоћеном Богочовеку. То се огледа у Христовом укору на младићев поздрав „Учитељу добри“ — „Нико није добар осим Једнога Бога“. Ово поставља питање за све нас: да ли смо у стању да у личности Христовој препознамо да је Он добар управо зато што је, у Својој ипостаси, савршени Бог и савршени човек? То је од пресудне важности како бисмо спознали и остварили сопствено спасење.

Друго питање које младић поставља гласи: „Шта ми треба чинити да наследим живот вечни?“ Важно је приметити да Господ Свој одговор започиње навођењем заповести које се односе на наш однос према ближњима: не убиј, не сведочи лажно, поштуј оца и мајку и тако даље. Младић потврђује да је све то испунио од младости. Међутим, када му Господ каже да прода све што има, како би се ослободио ропства материјалном, младић одлази жалостан — трагично сведочећи да су му пролазна уживања овога живота била важнија од живота вечнога.

Како се посета нашег Оца и Јерарха поклопила са празником Детињци, Његово Преосвештенство је са радошћу учествовало у традиционалном „везивању“ деце. Деца су своје „ослобођење“ заслужила певањем песме Светом Николи „Ок ток то…“. Његово Преосвештенство је децу поучио и изрецитовао енглеску верзију исте песме, коју је саставио блаженопочивши отац Никодим (Прибојан). Као награду за њихов труд, деца су од Његовог Преосвештенства добила слаткише.

За све присутне наше вредно Коло сестара припремило је богату трпезу љубави. Захваљујемо нашем Оцу и Јерарху на његовој непрестаној очинској бризи за нашу заједницу.
