FAITH AND FRIENDSHIP: A MEMORABLE THIRD WEEK AT SHADELAND

Week Three at St. Sava Camp in Shadeland began on Sunday, July 27, 2025, as campers arrived from across the region. Each morning started with church services, followed by a full day of classes in music, religion, kolo, and arts and crafts. Afternoons were filled with lively activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing at the lake, along with sports and additional arts and crafts. The day concluded with vespers and an evening event—ranging from bowling and survivor-themed games to movie night. A special highlight this year was the return of a beloved tradition from over a decade ago: a hayride around the camp’s scenic surroundings.

For many campers, the highlight of the week is usually the dance or a trip to Waldameer. However, this younger group found their greatest joy in bowling. Laughter filled the lanes as they knocked down pins alongside their counselors, then spent the rest of the evening either singing along to a Camp Rock movie or getting competitive with board games.

Although rain postponed the Waldameer trip, the fun didn’t miss a beat—Friday simply became the new Thursday. Campers continued with their classes, danced the night away, and closed the evening with the Svadba kolo. On Friday, they finally made it to Waldameer, ending the week with rides, games, and breathtaking views from the Ferris Wheel.

Camp continues to thrive under the dedicated leadership of Teta Millie, Teta Dee Dee, and Teta Marija. Their love and commitment ensure a welcoming, joyful experience for campers, counselors, and volunteers alike. Head Counselor Stana Topich led the exceptional team of counselors, and a special thank-you goes to the kitchen volunteers who kept everyone well fed throughout the week. Thank you to His Grace Bishop Irinej for visiting and being with the campers, counselors and staff every week, as well as Fr. Dragan Zaric and Fr. Andrej Pavlovic for their guidance all week.

Shadeland is a place where faith and fun intersect, where friendships are formed, and where memories are made. It is a living testament to the joy of practicing one’s faith in community, surrounded by nature’s beauty and strengthened by spiritual guidance. For those who have experienced it, Shadeland remains a treasured chapter in their journey of faith and personal growth.
